The Science and Mathematics Academy (SMA) is a magnet program located at Aberdeen High School in Aberdeen, Maryland available to Harford County residents entering high school with high academic achievement.[1] It was founded in 2004 by its first coordinator Donna Clem and in association with Dennis Kirkwood. The school is an active member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology and part of Harford County Public Schools.[2]
"The program provide students with the opportunity to experience challenging coursework in science, mathematics, and technology with an emphasis on research applications. Within the SMA schedule, many honors classes are integrated including Honors English 9, Honors English 10, Honors Government 9, Honors Biology, Honors Earth Science, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, and Honors Algebra II. A.P. classes are also strongly encouraged including A.P. World History, A.P. U.S. History, A.P. English 11, A.P. English 12, a required A.P. Math (A.P. Calculus AB, A.P. Statistics), and a required A.P. Science (A.P. Biology, A.P. Chemistry, A.P. Environmental, A.P. Physics).
Electives in the SMA also add to the programs uniqueness. Electives are based on interest and may not be available every year. The SMA electives in previous years have included Astrophysics, Bacteriology, Biotechnology, Computer Aided Drafting and Design (C.A.D.D.), Cryptology, Design Engineering and Patents, Ecology, Forensic Chemistry, Fundamentals of Kinesiology, Genetics, Linear Algebra, Materials Science, Mathematical Logic, Microcontrollers with Application of Fuzzy Logic, Organic Chemistry, Plant Physiology (proposed), Principles of Engineering, Robotics, and Sports Physiology.[3][4]
